Annunciation 04:10
Do not be afraid the angel's message said in that hidden place found so full of grace where you stayed, where you'd wait [the angel] "You have found such favor with the one true God and you will conceive in your womb and bear the one true Son of Man" With stakes very high the world could only sigh despair was all we'd known when the question had been posed and then you spoke, and then you spoke [the Immaculata] "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord of hosts, may it be done unto me according to your holy word" Overshadowed, by so much light overshadowed, with love so bright [the angel] "You have found such favor with the one true God" [the Immaculata] "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord my God" [the angel] "and you will conceive in your womb and bear the Son of God" [the Immaculata] "may it be done unto me according to your holy word"

Visitation 02:04
The journey wasn't short, and you you were yourself with child but charity would draw you to your cousin for a while In haste, you set upon the road with Joseph at your side into the hill country you'd go to help her in her time and when she heard your voice her infant leapt for joy [the Immaculata] "My soul proclaims the Lord, He's done great things for me." [St. Elizabeth] "And blessed is the one, whose fiat changed all things." And when she heard your voice her infant leapt for joy And she remained with her three months and then returned.

Nativity 03:41
After the fall, we could only wait for what was foretold, so long ago who could have known, such love would come down? to truly know us, in all our ways but one and so much joy you had inside the Lord's nativity is nigh in such a place not fit for Him but it would teach us so much Born to save us all from our selfish ways we've known so long she's the new Eve, mother to us all the new Adam is born today Those shepherds of old, knew just what they had seen as kings from the east, would make the way we'd follow then on, the light that finally gives true light so much we can learn from that Child with so much light And so much joy you had inside the Lord's nativity is nigh Born to save us all from our selfish ways we've known so long she's the new Eve, mother to us all the new Adam is born today the new Adam is born today

Presentation 05:01
[Simeon] I knew this day was coming for most of my life but not without its own surprise until now I've not been bound by time until the light from that little Child [Simeon] The years have brought a chill, the bones could only know and sometimes a darkness that was often hard to throw but through it all was the promise that I knew alone Lo, your King comes to you triumphant and so true your King comes to you triumphant and victorious too [Simeon] Behold I am but a man just and waiting for consolation while there may be more I could do it pales in comparison to the sight here Lo, your King comes to you triumphant and so true your King comes to you triumphant and victorious [Simeon] You can dismiss me now you can dismiss me now Lo, your King comes to you triumphant and so true your King comes to you triumphant and victorious So true, so true

Finding 03:26
On the way back home again after the blessed feast as twilight neared and the darkness fell the Child had not been seen Such terror, sadness, anxiety alone was their little boy the fear in searching for three days would soon be replaced with such joy Why did you even have to look? There's one place that I will always have to be In the house that's been prepared for all humanity Please come and see The deepest questions he had posed the answers he'd already known but merely the act of asking them enlightened each and every soul Why did you even have to look? There's one place that I will always have to be In the house that's been prepared for all humanity Please come and see Why would we even have to look? There's one place that He will always have to be In the house that's been prepared for all humanity Please come and see Please come and see Please come and see

Agony 02:52
Stay here for a while the hour's drawing near so much to reconcile the scandal will bring fear Stay here, the weight is crushing the time is almost here the thoughts have turned to blood as the cup is nearly filled and now I am alone could you not wait an hour with me? If only you could know the bitterness tomorrow brings and now, I'm all alone could you not wait with me? So alone, so alone and now I am alone could you not wait an hour with me? If only you could know the bitterness tomorrow brings and now, I'm all alone could you not wait with me? So alone, could you not wait an hour with me?

Scourging 03:58
Staring down the last hours foretold I'd known this was coming so long ago the bitterness, bitterness has never been so profound tied here, no way to avoid the crowd I'll take these stripes for you now to restore all that's lost until now these bones are all numbered blood spilled all around His most precious body, so torn and so bound Choosing weapons, to rip flesh from bone the broken hearted Blessed Mother knows the sins of man, sins of man did this to the spotless Lamb still overwhelming love fills them to the end I'll take these stripes for you now to restore all that's lost until now these bones are all numbered blood spilled all around His most precious body, so torn and so bound These bones are all numbered blood spilled all around His most precious body so torn and so bound I'll take these stripes for you now to restore all that's lost until now these bones are all numbered blood spilled all around His most precious body, so torn and so bound His most precious body, so torn and so bound

Crowning 03:25
He was mocked for thoughts that never came to his mind, not even one time spit upon for jealous rage that's come and gone from one age to all the rest it's all passed on as thorns go deep Pierced through and through for all we do as all is made new He's pierced through and through He was crowned, and struck upon the head and face to make up for the ways we tear each other down with forked tongues with each brand new day, we start again will we ever see, the pain we dispense? I offer no relief only more grief yet, in this state You want me anyway You want us anyway Pierced through and through for all we do as all is made new He's pierced through and through for all we do He's pierced through and through as all is made new He's pierced through and through

Carrying 04:38
The last steps to be taken on this side of the curtain it's all coming down every stone nearly thrown to the ground Gone are the days of despair at such a cost no one could bear except You no one could bear except You To fall three times, and get back up is love and to kiss that cross as death awaits the dust and blood are one the dust and blood are one the dust and blood are one, on You With each step to be taken a new ending is written never as before all we could hope for and more To fall three times, and get back up is love and to kiss that cross as death awaits You the dust and blood are one the dust and blood are one the dust and blood are one, on You You'd do it again, You'd do it all again To fall three times, and get back up is love and to kiss that cross as death awaits the dust and blood are one the dust and blood are one the dust and blood are one, on You

Crucifixion 03:45
And on that darkest day when all the others had run, not afraid to be seen She stood with Mary [Magdalene] and John She was the first to believe and guard You when you were young confident all the while in who You were from day one Numbered were the words that You had left as You hung there in bitter, painful stress You wanted to give us just one last gift: "Behold your mother now", she is never far the sea's own shining star With tenderness she will light the path that leads to her Son so He can teach us the truth and how to suffer as one The medicine for our salvation, not punishment for our damnation He took the fall for cursed men to show the depths that He would go to break the fetter's hold and welcome us back home

about

Joyful ~ Sorrowful

He wanted to give us just one last gift: "Behold your mother now."

There is no shortage of things in this world that we humans misunderstand or spend the majority of our lifetimes failing to fully comprehend. The Holy Rosary is among those things. For many, it is merely a string of beads, perhaps passively mistaken as jewelry. For others, it may have been a part of their youth and upbringing but has since become lost in a sea of vague nostalgia. But for those with the patience and courage to dig deeper, it unlocks a bottomless well of mystery, love, inspiration, consolation, and Christ's infinite mercy. At its very core, the Rosary presents a panoramic view of the most important events in the life of Christ that poetically and epically reveal the greatest love story of all time. Each decade humbly invites a deep contemplation of salvation's origin amidst an atmospheric soundtrack of prayer, not vainly repeated, but tenderly offered like a mother's ceaseless embrace of her newborn infant or the wedding-day resounding echo of 'I love you' that can only convey the true expression between bride and bridegroom.

The Blessed Mother is also greatly misunderstood in modern society. While not the subject of worship as some contend, how could her role as loving mother, nurturer and protector of the Christ child deserve anything less than the utmost respect and love? Everything about her directs humanity to her beloved Son. Where you find Mary, you will find Jesus, and in the words of St. Maximilian Kolbe, you could never love her more than Christ does.

It is in this context that Joyful ~ Sorrowful is presented, bringing the listener from the Incarnation to the Crucifixion. Christ is the center of each mystery and the absolute focal point of our attention; humbly and sweetly, we also find His mother whose 'yes' was so critical to God's plan for Christ's entrance into our fallen world. From that moment and all the way to the foot of the cross, Mary gently directs humanity to her beloved Son, so He can teach us the truth.

As beautifully depicted in the cover art for Joyful ~ Sorrowful, which is excerpted from Caravaggio's Madonna and Child with St. Anne, the Christ child's own foot is guiding the Blessed Mother's as they work together to stamp out the serpent. If we allow it, Christ Himself, through Mary's example of humility and submission to God's will, helps us to overcome all that imperils the soul on its earthly journey to the eternal home.

"To Jesus, through the Immaculata!"

about

Peter Johnston RVA Richmond, Virginia

To put it simply, Peter Johnston RVA is Catholic indie rock; you
wouldn't hear this at mass, but it does try to prove that traditional Catholic thought and indie rock are not mutually exclusive. It began easily enough as a few home recordings but has slowly turned into a full on project that explores matters of human dignity and common good in society.
Sincerely yours,
Peter Johnston RVA
