The rules of the game never change, a whisper is all it takes It's a virtue not to be known, you're better of this way Be not afraid, not today Be not afraid, not today, be not afraid Some say it's all over now It'll never be the same again but the worst is not on us yet so let the future start today So put out into the deep, and let down all the nets There's no time to be ashamed, the truth is not second guessed Be not afraid, not today Be not afraid, not today, be not afraid Some say it's all over now It'll never be the same again but the worst is not on us yet so let the future start today

Sing my tongue the glory of the victorious fight Sing of the noble triumph Our first father was defrauded into misery from the first fatal bite He ate and died but then, this good tree would compensate sustaining the sweetest weight Sweetest wood and sweetest nails Sustaining the sweetest weight It was the work of salvation Planned so willingly Faithful cross! Among all! You are the noblest tree, no forest can produce anything similar Sweetest wood and sweetest nails Sustaining the sweetest weight It was the work of salvation Planned so willingly Faithful cross! Among all! You are the noblest tree, no forest can produce anything similar

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation Oh my soul praise Him for He is thy health and salvation Praise to the Lord who o'er all things so wonderously reignith Shelters thee under His wings yeah so gently sustaineth All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near Praise Him in glad adoration Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee Praise to the Lord, oh let all that is in me adore Him All that hath life and breath come now with praises before Him Has thou not seen? All they desires ever've been granted in what He ordaineth Let the amen, sound from His people again Ponder anew, what the Almighty can do If with His love He befriend thee If with His love He befriend thee

It doesn't take too much to remind me It seems to happen almost all the time I know how lost that I would be without you It isn't something that I want to ever try And then you call out, doesn't matter what I'm doing I hear your voice and all is fine You're even more than words could ever say, I'm trying I love you more now, I love you more now It seems so weird we're like the same person We even like the same people, most of the time The years are flying, so much so I'm not whining But it would be so great to freeze all the days and nights And then you call out, doesn't matter what I'm doing I hear your voice and all is fine You're even more than words could ever say, I'm trying I love you more now, I love you more now I love you more now, I love you more now

Downtown 03:22
You didn't leave too much unsaid I guess blood means more than water does, once again The floodgate is open, that much is clear I won't pretend to be the one, who's sincere You came downtown, pretend you're around but it's so late, you've got another place to make I thought we were friends, it doesn't feel that way I'm on my own more times than I'd like to claim I won't make a noise now I'll just stay put It's not worth a fight I can't win when it's so moot You came downtown, pretend you're around but it's so late, you've got another place to make another place to make
6.
I thought I understood, the writing on the wall It's there all day, and all night too From the 18th floor, you're just as high up, as you are down I could not have known, the lengths that you would go To stay the same You thought the common good, was only yours to save I didn't know the time of day or even where I was It's hard to be what you can be as you stare down a gun You'll never be the same again, you'll never be the same You'll never be the same again, you'll never be the same I didn't know the time of day or even where I was It's hard to be what you can be as you stare down a gun
7.
It seemed so simple from the start I thought I always knew the part too You can't turn a page that's not been turned for you You stay away not knowing what is true Sold a dream that's not to be Without the pride and empty vanity A quiet voice has kept me in the game Until it's just too far away I tried a thousand times to run so far away The roads lead back to you It's not as if my mind is not my own right now Please heal the wounds I choose I'll take the blame, I'll take the blame, my Friend I do the same things wrong again and again I'll be my own saboteur, I can be so immature I tried a thousand times to run so far away The roads lead back to you It's not as if my mind is not my own right now Please heal the wounds I choose Please heal the wounds I choose

about

Have you ever been mid-verse of Praise to the Lord, the Almighty during the entrance hymn at Mass and wondered what it would sound like with a big, guitar-laden rock arrangement? Peter Johnston RVA did, and it started a sonic journey that resulted in the first formal, multi-song release from the Richmond, Virginia based songwriter entitled, Be Not Afraid. The seven song EP sets out to prove that traditional Catholic thought and indie rock are not mutually exclusive, drawing inspiration from the earliest papal address of St. Pope John Paul II, the Crux Fidelis, the Sacrament of Penance, the calling to one's vocation in life, and of course, a familiar hymn dating back to the 1660s with lyrics credited to Joachim Meander, as translated by Catherine Winkworth in the 19th century. The songs economically combine reverb soaked guitars with ambitious bass and drum textures in hopes of creating a series of mystical, ethereal landscapes for the listener. The EP cover art complements this goal using William Holman Hunt's The Light of the World image to remind one that Christ "shines in the darkness...by the light of reason, by the voices of creatures, which all cry aloud that there is a Creator, and He ought to be worshipped and loved" (Lapide). It is only with this knowledge that we can form, in the words of St. Pope John Paul II, a fruitful alliance between Gospel and art, while having the courage to truly be not afraid.
Sincerely,
Peter Johnston RVA

about

Peter Johnston RVA Richmond, Virginia

To put it simply, Peter Johnston RVA is Catholic indie rock; you
wouldn't hear this at mass, but it does try to prove that traditional Catholic thought and indie rock are not mutually exclusive. It began easily enough as a few home recordings but has slowly turned into a full on project that explores matters of human dignity and common good in society.
Sincerely yours,
Peter Johnston RVA
