Summer Fade 03:23
Summer Fade Winter came and washed away any sense of self reliance all the plans and thoughts drawn up suddenly seem so small the dark night of the soul is near though I'm deafened, it's so clear I need a light more than I claim to keep the promises I made in warmer days when all seemed well and I thought that peace had surely come to dwell so close The longer days have gone away solitude is such a poor friend in the din of nothingness I finally taste dejection and glimpse the one who first loved me the only vision I need I want this light more than I know to live the promise I've been shown with certainty that all is well and confident that peace has come to dwell so close

Falling Back 02:58
Falling Back The new year is here it doesn't feel so new I haven't changed the way these eyes perceive All the things, I thought that I had learned in the quiet of my heart that You'd shown me I'm always falling back It keeps me coming back the folly of my sighs, I've wasted all this time apart from You always falling back... keeps me coming back... Howling winds and all the holy souls I hope to find my place among their ranks and walk through the hidden veil to see the longing of the heart that's always been there Always falling back You keep on calling back the folly of my sighs I've wasted all this time apart from You the rain will fall apart from You... I'm always falling back You keep on calling back the folly of my sighs I've wasted all this time apart from You the rain will fall apart from You...

about

"A proud and avaricious man never rests, whereas he who is poor and humble of heart lives in a world of peace. The humble live in continuous peace, while in the hearts of the proud are envy and frequent anger."
Thomas a Kempis, Imitation of Christ

There's nothing like a long, cold winter to bring your interior life to the forefront of your being. More often than not, an honest interior reflection melts away any overinflated sense of self. In the barren desolation of winter, we come face to face with our physical, mental, and spiritual frailty in the midst of a biting, relentless chill. We are a speck in the vast and snowy landscape, further dwarfed by the cold expanse of the universe in which we are even less than that snowy speck which we initially fancied ourselves. What else can we conclude, but 'memento mori'! Yet, in what seems to be a moment of all encompassing abandonment, we are perhaps drawn closest to the warmth of Christ for it is only in such a moment that one can begin to comprehend even the slightest glimpse of the bitter rejection He willingly suffered between Gethsemane and Golgotha at the hands of our own sinful pride. It is only in the complete destruction under the ruins of our own sense of self-reliance that our hearts begin to make a place for the meek Lamb who humbled Himself to meet us in our nothingness. It is here that we will find the calm that we seek.

"To be taken with love for a soul, God does not look on its greatness, but the greatness of its humility."
- St. John of the Cross, OCD

about

Peter Johnston RVA Richmond, Virginia

To put it simply, Peter Johnston RVA is Catholic indie rock; you
wouldn't hear this at mass, but it does try to prove that traditional Catholic thought and indie rock are not mutually exclusive. It began easily enough as a few home recordings but has slowly turned into a full on project that explores matters of human dignity and common good in society.
Sincerely yours,
Peter Johnston RVA
